What is executive coaching?
Executive coaching is a professional development experience for individuals in leadership roles, that is designed to help them improve their skills, in order to achieve specific professional goals and company results. It’s a highly personalized and confidential engagement tailored to the unique needs and circumstances of the individual person. The executive coaching process involves a collaborative relationship between you, the executive leader, and me, the coach, where we use regular one-on-one sessions during which we discuss challenges, explore solutions, and track progress toward your goals.
A particular aspect of executive coaching is, that executives often have no one to talk to about their own work issues. Having a neutral person to talk to, one who’s outside of the organization and can view the situation from multiple angles, can be a source of growth and reflection.
What are the benefits of executive coaching ?
Through executive coaching leaders can uncover blind spots, identify strengths and weaknesses, and gain greater self-awareness, helping them develop a more effective approach, aligned with their goals. The executive coach provides specific thoughts and support to help leaders improve critical leadership capabilities like communication, decision-making, and delegation, helping them become more effective in their role, build stronger relationships with their team, and create a more positive and productive work environment. Executive coaching works by helping business leaders identify objectives, create an actionable development plan and hold them accountable for making progress toward those goals. The executive coach will act as a trusted advisor providing guidance, feedback and support whenever needed to help leaders navigate challenges, overcome obstacles and continue to grow and develop in their roles and personal life.
Executive coaching can also help leaders in a transition to understand their new role and the specific skills needed to succeed, allowing them to focus and develop the exact skills needed to earn the respect of their peers faster, build stronger relationships with their team members, and establish clear goals and performance expectations.
How does executive coaching work ?
The executive coach and the coachee need to build rapport and establish a relationship based on trust and mutual respect. This involves establishing clear goals and expectations for the engagement and identifying the leader’s strengths, weaknesses and areas for improvement. Sometimes, an initial personality assessment using a psychometric tool might be used. For this, I work with MASTER International, the leading European provider of HR assessment tools. After the leadership assessment and building rapport, we work together to develop a plan of action. The plan of action involves identifying specific strategies and tactics that you can use to achieve your goals and overcome any specific challenges you may be facing.
Throughout the engagement, the executive coach provides ongoing support and guidance to the leader. This may include regular check-ins, feedback sessions, and additional coaching sessions as needed, helping the leader stay on track and be held accountable for making progress.
How to maximize the impact of the coaching initiative ?
You need to be fully engaged and committed to the process. This means being open to potentially intense exchanges and being willing to try new approaches. It’s also important for you to be honest and transparent with the coach, sharing any challenges and concerns openly, so that the executive coach can provide the best possible support. This level of intensity may take you out of your comfort zone, therefore the well established rapport and trust between coach and you is paramount to success.
